Landing points

Position on the network

Cyprus occupies a strategically useful position in the eastern Mediterranean, lying within relatively short cable distances of the Levantine coast, Egypt, Greece and Turkey. That geography has made it a natural waypoint for systems connecting Europe to the Middle East and beyond, and the island's cable count reflects that utility.

Two landing points are documented on the register: Kofinou and Pentaskhinos. Having more than one landing station is a meaningful baseline for resilience — a fault or maintenance outage at a single facility does not automatically sever the island's external connectivity.

The cable mix

Nine systems are associated with Cyprus, eight of them active. The roster spans a wide range of vintages and purposes. MedNautilus, which entered service in 2001, represents an earlier generation of Mediterranean infrastructure. At the other end of the timeline, PEACE Cable entered service in 2022 and brings a direct link toward East Africa and onward to Asia — a route corridor that older Mediterranean systems rarely addressed from this island.

The remaining active systems — APHRODITE-1, APHRODITE-2, CIOS, Hawk, LEV and the Micronesia Cable System — fill out a picture of layered connectivity. The APHRODITE cables, named for the island's mythological association, serve regional routes. CIOS and Hawk add further path diversity within the broader Mediterranean and Middle Eastern corridor. LEV connects toward the Levant.

That variety matters. When a cable inventory draws on systems with different route geometries, different owners and different construction eras, the practical effect is that no single cut point or commercial disruption is likely to isolate the country entirely. Cyprus is not dependent on a single trunk.

Quantum Cable, currently at the planned stage, will add further capacity once it enters service. Its arrival will incrementally improve both raw bandwidth and the number of independent paths available to the island.

What geography implies

The eastern Mediterranean is one of the busiest transit zones for long-haul submarine cables moving between Europe and Asia. Cyprus benefits from proximity to those trunk routes without sitting directly on the chokepoints — such as the Suez approaches — that concentrate risk. The island is close enough to regional hubs to attract dedicated laterals while also landing systems with much longer reach, as PEACE Cable demonstrates.

The result is a connectivity profile that has moved well beyond the fragility typical of small island states, though the concentration of documented landing infrastructure at two points remains worth monitoring as traffic volumes grow.
