Overview
Quantum Cable is a planned submarine cable system designed to carry up to 200 Tb/s across a route spanning the western and central Mediterranean. The system connects Bilbao on Spain's Bay of Biscay coast with Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez in western France, then continues through Genoa in northern Italy before terminating at Kofinou in Cyprus.
Route and Geography
The landing sequence traces a coherent arc from the Atlantic approaches of southern Europe into the heart of the Mediterranean. Bilbao sits at the western end, giving the system a foothold on Spain's northern coast and indirect proximity to transatlantic cable corridors. Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez, on France's Vendée coast, provides a French landing point south of the established cable cluster around Marseille. Genoa anchors the system to northern Italy, one of continental Europe's major internet exchange hubs. The eastern terminus at Kofinou, Cyprus — a well-established cable landing location on the island's southern coast — places the system within reach of onward connectivity toward the Middle East and beyond.

The Mediterranean is one of the world's most cable-dense regions, carrying traffic between Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia. Despite this density, diversity of routing and ownership remains a live concern — particularly for traffic flows that bypass the congested chokepoint around Egypt and the Suez corridor. A system running from Iberia to Cyprus via France and Italy offers an alternative backbone path across the northern Mediterranean, and its 200 Tb/s design capacity positions it among the higher-capacity regional systems on the drawing board.
