Overview

SubCom Responder is a purpose-built cable ship operated by SubCom, one of the principal contractors in the submarine cable industry. Constructed in 2001 at Keppel Hitachi Zosen in Singapore (Hull 029) and registered under the Marshall Islands flag, the vessel is rated for both installation work — laying entirely new cable systems — and repair operations on systems already in service.

At 139.1 metres in length with a 21-metre beam and a gross tonnage of 12,184, the ship is built around its cable-handling capacity: 5,465.5 tonnes of cable can be loaded into its tanks, enough to serve transoceanic routes. Accommodation supports up to 80 crew and technicians.

Positioning and Burial Equipment

The Responder holds a DP2 dynamic positioning classification, meaning it can hold station automatically using thrusters alone — essential when working over a fixed point on the seabed without anchoring. The ABS +DPS-2 notation reflects the classification society and specific system standard.

For burial, the ship deploys the Sea Stallion 3, a seabed plough — essentially a steel frame towed along the ocean floor that opens a trench, lays the cable into it, and allows sediment to cover it. The Sea Stallion 3 is fitted with an 80-tonne traction winch.

Subsea inspection and intervention is handled by the SMD Nereus IV, a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) — an unmanned submersible controlled from the ship — rated to 2,500 metres depth.

Repeater Handling

The Responder carries dedicated climate-controlled storage for 150 amplifier bodies. Repeaters, which boost signal strength at intervals along a cable route, require careful temperature management during transit to protect sensitive electronics.
