Tanzania's submarine cable infrastructure is anchored at Dar es Salaam, the country's commercial capital and its sole documented cable landing point. Two active systems serve the country: EASSy (Eastern Africa Submarine Cable System) and ZanLink, each bringing a distinct character to Tanzania's international connectivity.
EASSy is the workhorse of East African submarine connectivity. Running approximately 10,000 kilometres along the eastern African coastline, it links a chain of countries from South Africa northward toward the Horn of Africa and beyond, feeding into onward routes to Europe and Asia. Tanzania's connection to EASSy places it within one of the region's most significant cable consortia, backed by a broad group of carriers and operators — giving the route a degree of institutional weight that single-owner systems often lack.
ZanLink, as its name implies, has a more localised character, connecting the Tanzanian mainland with Zanzibar, the semi-autonomous archipelago that sits roughly 35 kilometres offshore in the Indian Ocean. The precise length of ZanLink is not documented in this register, but its function is clear: bridging the Zanzibar Channel to ensure the islands share in whatever capacity and redundancy the mainland landing point provides. Without a system like ZanLink, Zanzibar would depend entirely on microwave or satellite links — technologies that carry their own latency and capacity constraints.
Resilience and its limits
With only two cables documented at a single landing station, Tanzania's submarine connectivity picture is narrower than those of regional peers with multiple landing points spread along their coastlines. A fault affecting Dar es Salaam's cable infrastructure — whether through vessel anchoring, seabed geology, or hardware failure — would place significant pressure on terrestrial and satellite alternatives. The concentration of landings at one point is a structural vulnerability common to many East African nations, and Tanzania is no exception.
The presence of EASSy does provide some mitigation: its multi-country routing means traffic can, in principle, be rerouted through adjacent landing stations if the system itself remains intact. But protection at the in-country level depends on the physical diversity of landing infrastructure in Dar es Salaam itself.
Geography's role
Tanzania's Indian Ocean coastline stretches for well over a thousand kilometres, yet the documented cable footprint remains concentrated in the north of that coast at Dar es Salaam. The southern reaches of the country, and the interior — where landlocked neighbours depend on Tanzanian territory for their own transit — rely on the reach of terrestrial fibre networks extending from the coastal landing stations inland and across borders.
