A well-connected peninsula

South Korea's submarine cable footprint reflects both its geographic position and its role as a major digital economy in Eastern Asia. The country is served by a mix of active systems spanning trans-Pacific and shorter regional routes, with Pusan the documented landing point anchoring this infrastructure on the Korean coast.

The single retired system on the register — the China-US Cable Network (CUCN), which entered service in 1999 — illustrates how quickly the undersea cable industry turns over. CUCN's withdrawal from service has been more than offset by the active systems that followed it.

The active cable mix

Eight active cables currently serve South Korea on this register: CKC, HJK, JKC, JNAC, KJCN, New Cross Pacific Cable System, TPE2, and Trans-Pacific Express (TPE). The naming patterns point to the strategic logic at work. Several systems carry the initials of Korea alongside Japan and China — CKC, JKC, KJCN — suggesting shorter, high-density corridors connecting the three neighbouring economies. Others, notably TPE and the New Cross Pacific Cable System, are trans-Pacific in character, extending connectivity directly toward North America.

This combination matters for resilience. A country dependent on a single cable or a single corridor is exposed whenever that route is cut or degraded. South Korea's mix of regional links and long-haul Pacific systems means traffic can, in principle, be rerouted across different physical paths. Regional cables to Japan and China also provide onward reach into the broader global network, since both countries serve as major trans-Pacific hubs in their own right.

Geography and concentration

Pusan, on South Korea's south-eastern coast, is the only landing point documented here. Its position — facing the Korea Strait and with open-water access toward Japan and the wider Pacific — makes it a logical concentration point for cables arriving from multiple directions. Whether additional landing points exist elsewhere on the peninsula, the register does not yet confirm.

Concentration at a single documented landing point is worth noting. Even with eight active cables, if those systems converge on one coastal facility, a localised event at that site carries disproportionate risk for the country's international connectivity. The physical diversity of cable routes and the geographic spread of landing infrastructure are distinct questions, and the latter remains only partially visible in the current data.
