Landing points

Portugal's place in the submarine cable network

Portugal's geography does a great deal of the work here. Jutting into the North Atlantic at Europe's southwestern edge, and with the Azores and Madeira extending its maritime reach further into open ocean, Portugal offers cable operators a logical landfall for systems running between Europe, the Americas, and Africa. That geographic logic is reflected in the composition of cables serving the country.

Among the documented systems, SAT-3/WASC — the South Atlantic 3 and West Africa Submarine Cable — stands out as a foundational link, having entered service in 2001 and spanning some 13,000 kilometres. It anchors a generation of connectivity along the African coastal route. WACS, the West Africa Cable System, covers a similar corridor at 14,500 kilometres, providing a parallel path to the south. Together, these two cables illustrate Portugal's role as an entry point for traffic moving between West Africa and European networks.

The Atlantic dimension is equally well served. ATLANTIS-2, at 12,000 kilometres, and Europe India Gateway (EIG), at 15,000 kilometres, extend Portugal's connections across and beyond the Atlantic basin. Main One, a 14,000-kilometre system, has since retired from service — a reminder that cable infrastructure is not static and that route redundancy matters over time.

Additional systems — ATLANTIS, ATLAS, EURAFRICA, SAT-1, TAGIDE-2, and VSNL Western Europe — round out a network that is notably diverse for a country of Portugal's size. This breadth across multiple operators and routes provides meaningful resilience. Where a country relies on a single cable or a single landing point, a fault can cause severe disruption; Portugal's mix of active systems across distinct corridors reduces that single-point exposure considerably.

Landing infrastructure

Documented landing points concentrate around Seixal and Sesimbra, both on the western coast near Lisbon. Landing diversity within a country is a second layer of resilience — cables arriving at geographically separate points are less likely to be simultaneously affected by localised damage. With at least two distinct landing areas documented, Portugal has a reasonable foundation, though the precise allocation of individual cables across those sites warrants attention for operators planning high-availability routing.

Capacity and connectivity character

The overall picture is of a well-connected Atlantic hub with African reach. The mix of long-haul systems crossing different ocean corridors, served by infrastructure at multiple landing points, places Portugal in a stronger position than many Southern European peers. The retirement of Main One narrows capacity on certain routes, but the remaining active systems provide substantial aggregate bandwidth and path diversity for traffic transiting between continents.
