WACS is a substantial piece of infrastructure. Its route connects southern African economies northward through West Africa and onward to the United Kingdom, giving Namibia a path to European internet exchange points and the broader transatlantic network beyond. For a country with a small population spread across one of the world's most sparsely settled territories, having any direct submarine landing at all is significant — many landlocked or low-traffic nations rely entirely on terrestrial transit through neighbouring states.
What a single cable implies
The dependency, however, is notable. With only one cable documented at this landing, Namibia's international submarine capacity sits on a single system. There is no documented redundancy at the submarine layer — no second cable to absorb traffic if WACS suffers a fault, a cut, or a maintenance outage. Any disruption to the system would leave the country dependent on satellite links or terrestrial routes transiting through South Africa or other neighbours to maintain international connectivity.
