A landlocked nation beyond the cable map
Mongolia sits at one of the greatest possible removes from the world's submarine cable network. Bordered entirely by Russia to the north and China to the south, east and west, the country has no coastline and therefore no prospect of a direct submarine cable landing. Every bit of international bandwidth must travel overland before it can reach a subsea fibre system elsewhere.
No submarine cables serving Mongolia are documented in this register. That absence is not a gap in the data so much as a reflection of physical reality: landlocked countries by definition depend on their neighbours' infrastructure to reach the global network, and Mongolia is no exception.
Terrestrial transit and satellite capacity
Mongolia's international connectivity is understood to flow primarily through terrestrial fibre routes crossing into China and Russia, two countries with extensive domestic backbone networks and multiple submarine cable landing stations on their respective coastlines. Traffic destined for the broader internet must therefore traverse at least one — and often more than one — transit jurisdiction before reaching a subsea system.
This arrangement introduces layers of dependency that a country with a direct cable landing does not face. Capacity, routing decisions and the terms of access are all shaped by the policies and commercial interests of transit providers rather than by Mongolia itself. Resilience is constrained accordingly: a disruption to a transit network, a border crossing, or an upstream cable system can affect Mongolian connectivity in ways that are difficult to mitigate from within the country.
Satellite services provide an alternative path to international capacity, one that does not rely on terrestrial transit at all. For remote areas of Mongolia's vast and sparsely populated territory, satellite connectivity may be the only practical option regardless of how terrestrial routes perform.
