Mexico's place in the submarine cable network
Mexico occupies an unusual position in the global cable map. Bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the west and south, and opening onto the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean to the east, the country has natural landing opportunities on two separate ocean fronts. That geography should, in principle, support a diverse set of onward routes — toward the United States, Central America, South America, and across the Pacific toward Asia.

The cable mix
AMX-1, which entered service in 2014, is the most clearly attributed system. ARCOS-1 is a ring system that loops through the Caribbean and connects multiple territories along the Gulf and Caribbean coastlines, giving Mexico a foothold in a wider regional mesh. PAC — the Pan American Crossing — runs along the Pacific coast of the Americas, linking Mexico into a corridor that extends toward the United States to the north and further south into Central and South America.
Together these three systems provide Mexico with presence on both coasts, which is a meaningful baseline for resilience. A fault on a Pacific-facing cable need not, in theory, interrupt traffic that can reroute through a Caribbean or Gulf-facing system.
