Gateway to the global network

Libya's international submarine connectivity runs through Tripoli, the single documented landing point on the country's Mediterranean coastline. Three cables — Europe India Gateway (EIG), Hawk, and LSP — serve the country, making Tripoli both the sole entry point and the critical concentration of risk for Libya's external data traffic.

EIG is the most substantial of the three by any measure of reach, spanning roughly 15,000 kilometres and threading a corridor that connects Europe with the Gulf and the Indian subcontinent. Its inclusion in Libya's cable mix places the country on a long-haul route with considerable trunk capacity, linking Tripoli into a system designed primarily to serve the Europe–Asia traffic lane rather than Libyan domestic demand alone.

Hawk and LSP round out the portfolio, though detailed specifications for both — including ready-for-service dates and cable lengths — are not yet fully documented in this register. Their presence does, however, suggest that Libya is not entirely dependent on a single system, which matters when assessing the country's theoretical resilience to a cable fault or outage.

Resilience and concentration

Three cables serving one landing point is a mixed picture. The diversity of systems provides some capacity redundancy: if one cable requires maintenance or suffers damage, traffic can, in principle, shift to the remaining systems. That is a meaningful improvement over single-cable dependence.

The vulnerability, however, lies not in the number of cables but in their geographic concentration. When all systems land at the same facility, a disruption at that landing station — whether physical, logistical, or otherwise — affects the entire cable complement simultaneously. True resilience in submarine cable infrastructure typically requires geographically separated landing points, and Libya's documented profile does not yet show that diversity.

Geography as constraint

Libya's Mediterranean frontage is extensive, stretching across a long arc of North African coastline. In principle, that geography offers options for multiple, well-separated landing points that could distribute risk. The concentration at Tripoli likely reflects the practical pull of population density, existing infrastructure, and the economics of cable landing — costs and licensing considerations that consistently draw cables toward established hubs rather than spreading them across available coastline.

For a country of Libya's geographic scale, the current cable footprint represents a foundation, but one where the architecture of resilience remains a work in progress.
