An archipelago beyond the cable map

Kiribati presents one of the most challenging connectivity profiles on earth. Spread across roughly 3.5 million square kilometres of the central and western Pacific — straddling both the equator and the International Date Line — its 33 atolls and reef islands are separated by enormous stretches of open ocean. No submarine cable landings in Kiribati are documented in this register at present.

That absence is not an oversight so much as a reflection of genuine infrastructure reality. Laying submarine cable to low-lying atolls with shallow lagoons, limited port infrastructure and small population centres is commercially difficult to justify under conventional investment models. The economics of subsea cable construction typically favour routes connecting large population centres or major traffic hubs — criteria that Kiribati's scattered islands rarely meet on their own terms.

Satellite as the primary link

Without a documented cable landing, Kiribati's international connectivity depends on satellite services. Geostationary and, increasingly, low-Earth-orbit satellite constellations provide the country's link to the global internet, but satellite capacity carries inherent constraints: latency is higher than fibre, bandwidth costs more per megabit, and service quality can be affected by weather and orbital congestion. For a country where government services, healthcare communication and economic participation increasingly depend on reliable internet access, these limitations carry real consequences.

Geography as the defining constraint

The geographical challenge facing Kiribati is compounded by the fact that its three island groups — the Gilbert Islands, the Phoenix Islands and the Line Islands — are themselves separated by thousands of kilometres. Even a cable serving one group would leave the others unconnected unless a branching unit or separate system addressed them. This internal fragmentation means that any future cable solution would need to be carefully designed around the country's dispersed topology rather than treating it as a single landing destination.

Regional cable projects crossing the Pacific have, in some cases, been routed near Kiribati territory, but proximity to a cable route does not automatically translate into a landing point or accessible capacity.
