Position on the global network
Ireland's location on the western edge of Europe makes it a natural landfall point for cables crossing the North Atlantic. Traffic moving between North America and continental Europe frequently touches Irish shores before continuing onward, giving the country an outsized role in global data transit relative to its size.
Eleven active submarine cables serve Ireland, a count that reflects both its geographic convenience and the commercial weight of the technology sector it hosts. The mix spans short inter-island links across the Irish Sea, regional connections into the broader European network, and full transatlantic systems reaching the eastern seaboard of North America.
The cable mix
On the transatlantic side, AEConnect and Havfrue/AEConnect-2 represent direct high-capacity routes to North America, with the latter stretching nearly 7,900 kilometres and AEConnect running some 5,500 kilometres. 360atlantic (formerly Hibernia Atlantic) adds a further transatlantic path, providing route diversity that matters enormously when a single cut can redirect substantial volumes of traffic.
The Irish Sea is served by BT-TE1, Celtix Connect, and the Ir-UK Seg A and Seg B pair — shorter systems that bind Ireland tightly to the British network and, through it, to the dense cable hub centred on the south coast of England. SOLAS and LANIS-3 extend connectivity further into the regional fabric, while Sirius North and Sirius South add additional paths within the northern European cluster.
Taken together, the eleven systems provide meaningful redundancy. No single cable carries the whole of Ireland's international traffic, and the presence of both dedicated transatlantic routes and multiple inter-regional links means the network can absorb individual faults without a complete isolation event.
Landing points
Documented landings include Dublin and Leckanvy on the Republic of Ireland's west coast. Dublin's position as the primary landing node is consistent with its role as the country's commercial and data-centre hub. Leckanvy, on the Atlantic-facing coast of County Mayo, is better placed geometrically for cables arriving directly from North America, allowing them to make landfall without routing around the island.
Geography as infrastructure
Ireland's Atlantic frontage is an infrastructural asset. Where most of Europe's transatlantic cables must traverse the continental shelf and run through the busy English Channel approaches, Irish landings offer a more direct western entry point. That geography has shaped the cable map here as much as any commercial decision, and it continues to draw new investment in subsea capacity.
