A single cable, a single landing point

Gabon's connection to the global submarine network rests entirely on one system: the South Atlantic 3/West Africa Submarine Cable, universally known as SAT-3/WASC. The cable came into service in 2001, stretching roughly 13,000 kilometres along the West and southern African coastline before crossing the Atlantic. Its sole Gabonese landing is at Libreville, the capital, which concentrates the country's international submarine capacity at a single coastal node.

For a country with Atlantic coastline and a capital positioned near the equator, the geography is not unfavourable — Libreville sits naturally along the routing corridor that SAT-3/WASC follows as it strings together a series of West African nations. The problem is not location but the absence of alternatives.

What single-cable dependency means

Relying on one cable and one landing point creates a straightforward resilience problem. Any disruption to SAT-3/WASC — whether a fault along the cable, a maintenance window, or damage at the landing station — leaves Gabon without a submarine fallback. There is no redundant system to absorb traffic while repairs proceed, and no second landing point on national soil that could maintain connectivity through an alternative path.

SAT-3/WASC itself is a mature system, having entered service at the turn of the century. Cable infrastructure of that vintage was designed around the demand assumptions of its era, and while upgrades can extend useful life, the fundamental capacity envelope of an older system differs considerably from that of modern high-fibre cables built to current specifications. For Gabon, this means that not only resilience but raw capacity headroom may be constrained relative to countries served by newer or multiple systems.

Geography and the broader network picture

Gabon occupies a stretch of the Atlantic coast in central-west Africa, bordered by countries whose own connectivity profiles vary. Terrestrial cross-border links can supplement submarine capacity in some regional contexts, but such arrangements introduce their own dependencies and rarely substitute fully for a sovereign submarine landing.

The practical consequence is that Gabon's international bandwidth situation is shaped less by geography — which is workable — than by the thinness of the cable portfolio serving the country. A second landing, or a second cable system calling at Libreville, would materially change the resilience calculus. Until that changes, Gabon remains among the more exposed markets on the West African coast in terms of submarine network concentration.
