A single cable to the world

Eritrea's connection to the global submarine cable network runs through one documented landing point: Massawa, the historic port city on the Red Sea coast. There, the Eastern Africa Submarine Cable System — better known as EASSy — makes landfall, providing the country's only known fibre-optic link to the broader international network.

EASSy is a substantial cable by any measure, stretching roughly 10,000 kilometres along the eastern African seaboard and connecting a string of coastal nations from South Africa northward. Its presence in Massawa places Eritrea within reach of onward capacity to Europe, the Middle East and the rest of Africa, but the arrangement is a thin one: a single cable system, a single landing station, a single point of failure.

Capacity and resilience

Where multiple cables serve a country through independent landing points, operators can reroute traffic if one system is cut or degraded. Eritrea has no such fallback documented here. If EASSy experiences an outage — whether from a ship's anchor, a seabed fault, or maintenance work — there is no alternative submarine path on the register to absorb the load. That vulnerability is a structural reality for any nation dependent on a sole cable, and it shapes both the reliability that carriers can promise and the pricing that users ultimately face.

The depth of Eritrea's reliance on satellite links or terrestrial transit to neighbouring countries, particularly as backup or supplementary capacity, is not fully captured by submarine cable data alone. What the cable register does confirm is that the submarine layer offers no redundancy.

Geography and geopolitics

Eritrea's Red Sea coastline gives it natural access to one of the world's busiest maritime corridors, a route that carries a significant share of global cable traffic between Asia and Europe. The geographic position is, in principle, an asset — cables threading through the Red Sea pass close to Eritrean waters, and Massawa has served as a working port for generations.

Yet physical proximity to major cable routes does not automatically translate into connectivity. The number of systems that have chosen to land in Eritrea remains limited, and the country's position on the global cable map reflects both its size and the broader investment calculus that governs where cable consortia choose to build branching units and landing stations.
