The Jutland peninsula extends northward from continental Europe while the Danish straits — the Kattegat and the Belt passages — form the narrow gateway between the North Sea and the Baltic. That geography has made Denmark both a natural landfall for transatlantic cables seeking a northern European terminus and a relay point for regional Baltic connectivity.
The country's documented landing points cluster along the North Sea coast and the southwestern approaches: Blaabjerg and the nearby Måde landing on the Jutland coast, and Fanø, the barrier island that sits at the mouth of the Wadden Sea. These are not incidental choices — the flat, accessible shoreline and proximity to major population and data-centre infrastructure in the Danish interior make them practical termination points.
The cable mix
Denmark's active cable inventory spans two distinct functions. On the transatlantic side, TAT-14 — one of the longer cables on the register at 15,428 km — connects Denmark into a multi-landing North Atlantic ring that also serves the United States and several other Western European nations. Havfrue/AEConnect 2, at 7,851 km, provides a separate transatlantic path, and the older CANTAT-3, in service since 1994, adds a third transatlantic strand. That trio of long-haul cables represents meaningful route diversity for traffic moving between Denmark and North America.
The regional picture is filled out by BALTICA, ODIN, and the two KATTEGAT cables. The naming of KATTEGAT-1 and KATTEGAT-2 signals their function plainly — these are cables designed to work within the semi-enclosed sea that separates Denmark from Sweden, knitting together Scandinavian connectivity at shorter range. The Fehmarn Belt cable follows a similar logic, spanning the strait between Denmark and Germany and providing an additional pathway into the central European terrestrial network.
Pangea North and Pangea South, retired after entering service in 2001, no longer contribute active capacity, though their former presence illustrates the degree to which Danish cable infrastructure has been periodically refreshed.
Resilience and dependency
The combination of multiple transatlantic cables and several regional routes gives Denmark a more diversified submarine connectivity profile than many countries of comparable size. The transatlantic cables do not all share identical routing, which reduces the risk that a single fault isolates Denmark from North American traffic. Regional cables into Sweden and Germany provide additional terrestrial escape paths into European backbone networks. That layered structure — long-haul diversity supplemented by short-haul regional links — is generally considered sound infrastructure practice.
