Geography and connectivity
Czechia sits at the heart of Central Europe, bordered by Germany, Austria, Slovakia and Poland. Without coastline, the country has no submarine cable landing stations and no direct on-ramp to the global undersea network. That geography is not a deficiency unique to Czechia — landlocked nations by definition sit upstream of the subsea layer — but it does shape how international bandwidth reaches Czech networks and where the dependencies lie.
Connectivity to the broader internet backbone flows through terrestrial fibre crossing multiple national borders. Major transit corridors run westward through Germany, which hosts some of Europe's densest cable landing infrastructure, including North Sea and Atlantic systems terminating at hubs such as Cuxhaven, Norderney and Sylt. Traffic bound for southern Europe or the Middle East routes through Austria. Eastern and northern paths connect through Poland and Slovakia toward Baltic and Black Sea systems respectively.
Terrestrial transit and resilience
Reliance on terrestrial transit rather than direct submarine access is not inherently a resilience weakness, provided the overland routes are themselves diverse and redundant. Czechia benefits from its central position on the European fibre map: multiple high-capacity land cables converge on Prague and other Czech exchange points, offering operators several physical path options into the subsea network rather than dependence on a single corridor or a single neighbouring state's infrastructure.
That said, resilience ultimately depends on how far path diversity extends. Terrestrial cables share rights-of-way, cross shared border points and can be affected by the same regional events. The absence of a direct submarine landing means Czechia's international capacity ceiling is partly set by the transit arrangements and cross-border capacities its operators can negotiate and maintain.
Satellite connectivity
Satellite services provide an additional layer, particularly for enterprise and government users requiring path diversity independent of terrestrial infrastructure. Geostationary and low-Earth-orbit satellite capacity accessible from Czech territory supplements rather than replaces the terrestrial network for bulk traffic.
Register status
The Coral Sea Cables register does not currently document any submarine cables with a Czech landing point or a Czech-flagged system segment. This reflects the country's landlocked status rather than a gap in coverage.
