Systems including the New Cross Pacific Cable System, Trans-Pacific Express (TPE), TPE2, and the South-East Asia–Japan Cable (SJC) represent the kind of high-capacity, multi-landing architecture that underpins serious international bandwidth. Regional connectivity is reinforced by cables such as C-J FOSC, CKC, ECSC, JNAC, and NACS, which extend China's reach into neighbouring East and Southeast Asian markets and provide shorter-haul paths that complement the longer trans-Pacific routes.

Taken together, the mix suggests a degree of structural resilience. Where a country depends on a single cable or a single route corridor, any outage — whether from a ship's anchor, a seismic event, or a scheduled maintenance window — carries disproportionate consequences. China's active cable count distributes that risk across multiple systems and, by implication, multiple physical pathways. Its presence on the register is a reminder that submarine cable infrastructure turns over across decades: systems are superseded as capacity demands outgrow what older technology can economically deliver, and newer builds replace them rather than supplement them indefinitely. The CUCN's 30-kilometre documented length suggests a relatively short segment, likely a terminal or branch section rather than a full oceanic span.

Geography and strategic position

Shanghai's position as a landing hub is consistent with its role as a major commercial and financial centre; Shantou, in Guangdong Province, places a second access point within reach of the Pearl River Delta's dense industrial and technology economy. The separation between these two clusters provides at least some geographic diversity, reducing the likelihood that a single localised event would simultaneously disrupt all international cable traffic.
