SEA-ME-WE 3 — South-East Asia–Middle East–Western Europe 3 — was one of the most significant long-haul submarine cable systems of its era, spanning the corridor between Southeast Asia and Western Europe by way of the Middle East. The route it served is among the most strategically important in global telecommunications, carrying traffic between densely populated and economically active regions across three continents.
Capacity and Upgrades
The system's capacity history reflects both the scale of the original investment and the relentless growth in demand for bandwidth over its operational life. An initial design capacity of 0.02 Tbit/s was recorded in 1999, a figure that would be rendered modest by successive upgrades. By 2007 the system had been lifted to 0.96 Tbit/s, followed by a further expansion to 1.28 Tbit/s in 2009.
