Overview

Monet is a high-capacity submarine cable system spanning the Atlantic between Brazil and the eastern seaboard of the United States. Built by TE SubCom and ready for service in December 2017, the system lands at Praia Grande and Fortaleza on the Brazilian coast, with its northern terminus at Boca Raton, Florida. Its design capacity stands at 64 Tbit/s.

Route and Strategic Significance

The Brazil–United States corridor is one of the busiest data routes in the Western Hemisphere, carrying traffic between South America's largest economy and the internet infrastructure concentrated in North America. Fortaleza in particular has established itself as a critical hub for cables entering and leaving the South American continent, given its geographic position as the closest point on the Brazilian coast to Europe and its proximity to major North American routes. Praia Grande, near São Paulo, adds direct reach into Brazil's most populous and commercially dense region.

Ownership and Build

Monet is jointly owned by Algar Telecom, Angola Cables, ANTEL, and Google. The presence of Google among the owners reflects the company's broader strategy of investing directly in subsea infrastructure to support its own traffic demands and cloud services. Angola Cables brings an African telecommunications perspective to an otherwise Americas-focused consortium, a pairing that points to the broader ambitions of the ownership group. ANTEL, Uruguay's state-owned carrier, and Brazilian regional operator Algar Telecom round out the consortium with domestic South American interests.

TE SubCom, one of the established names in subsea cable construction, delivered the system.

Regional Context

Monet operates alongside several other cables serving the Brazil–United States route. Its combination of multiple Brazilian landing points and a substantial design capacity positions it as a significant contributor to the bandwidth available on one of South America's most important international corridors.
